Mushroom Mulch is an Ideal Organic Fertilizer

More homeowners every day are discovering the success derived from the use of mushroom mulch as an organic fertilizer and conditioner for their gardening soil.

A mixture of horse stable and chicken manure, cottonseed meal, grape residue, straw and additional nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium is the base used for mushroom growing. This prepared compost is packed into trays, which have been dipped into dungicide. The loaded trays are then put through a pasteurization period in bake-out rooms to eliminate ammonia, unwanted spores and insects.

Spawn (or mushroom seed) is mixed into the compost. Trays are placed in mushroom houses maintained in complete darkness with controlled temperatures and adequate moisture. As the mushrooms grow and ripen they are hand picked from the surface of the compost like strawberries. With the depletion of the harvest, the trays of compost are emptied in the outside area where further ageing and decomposition take place.

Since mushrooms contain no chlorophyll, only a fraction of the nutritional value is removed from the compost with their growth. Approximately three to four months elapse from the time the compost is placed in the mushroom houses to the stage when the materials is free of seeds, weeds and diseases and ready for use in the landscape.

This non-burning mulch is offered at mushroom farms in coarse and fine textures. The course mix is the material as it is emptied from the trays. The fine mushroom mulch has been aged longer and shredded for uniformity.

Coarse mulch can be used for rototilling or spading into lawn and ground covering areas, mixing with garden earth in planting holes for trees and shrubs and for surface mulching where water erosion may become a problem.

The finer material makes an excellent seed covering for newly sown areas, a thick mulch deter weed growth, top dressing on grass and dichondra lawns and as a addition to potting soil for container gardening.

Sand, Gravel & Decorative Rock

Cherry Valley Nursey has a wide selection of sand, gravel, and decorative rock which includes decorative boulders, plaster sand, decomposed granite, Palm Springs Gold Sand, and a selection of decorative gravels. Here are some general tips given by experts when designing outdoor and indoor projects with sand, gravel and decorative rocks:

1"-2" Salt River pebbles (also available in 2" - 4")

  • Mix and match - Select two or three types of rock, brick or stone panels that complement each other. Anymore than three usually is too much.
  • Choose one style - Rustic traditional or stark modern? Not both. For a more natural look, don’t mix styles.
  • Add dimension - Use more than one color or texture to add contrast, interest and dimension to rocks. Too many can be distracting.
  • Proper installation - Know proper installation techniques to avoid costly errors
  • Asymmetrical placement - In landscaped areas, rocks appear more natural when scattered and separated rather than lined up in symmetrical patterns.
  • Alternate textures - When adding texture to grottos, waterfalls, cliffs and other large features, imitate Mother Nature with random smooth and ragged patterns for a more authentic look.
